Cancer Care at Providence Hospital
Serving South Alabama and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Cancer Center at Providence Hospital utilizes a team approach to develop a personalized treatment plan for every cancer patient. We have a dedicated care team specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of all kinds of cancers and offer many treatment options including:
- Radiation therapy
- Surgical oncology
- Medication management
- Supportive cancer care services
- A Breast Center for early detection of breast cancer
The Cancer Center at Providence Hospital has board-certified medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. We also have the area’s leading specialist in the treatment of colorectal and gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Joseph Bornstein specializes in colorectal surgery and is now practicing at Providence Hospital in Mobile.
Cancer Imaging to Improve Outcomes
Providence also provides on-site PET/CT imaging technology that uses advanced technology to detect certain cancers at an earlier stage and monitors how certain cancers respond to treatment. Providence Hospital is the only healthcare facility in South Alabama to install advanced technology to diagnose and monitor even the smallest tumors more precisely in less time. The new Biograph mCT positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) offers more precise imaging and produces detailed high-resolution images of the body’s internal structures on a molecular level. This level of accuracy improves the doctor’s ability to diagnose, assess, treat and monitor disease activity by detecting the smallest lesions more precisely. Being able to pinpoint subtle changes that indicate cancer promises to greatly improve outcomes.
Advances in Radiation Oncology
In 2018, Providence will become the only facility in South Alabama equipped with the TrueBeam system for stereotactic body radiation therapy. With this advanced technology, our radiation oncologists can treat cancer anywhere in the body including lung, breast, prostate, and head and neck cancers with unmatched precision, speed and accuracy.
Providence also offers high-definition radiosurgery for brain lesions. With the Hyper Arc radiosurgery system, Providence is the only facility in South Alabama to be equipped with the fastest, most effective method of treating both single and multiple brain lesions
The Commission on Cancer, a program of the American College of Surgeons, recognizes our cancer center as a program that provides comprehensive, high-quality and patient-centered care.
Early Detection of Breast Center
The Providence Hospital Comprehensive Breast Care Center is a state-of-the art facility staffed by radiologists specializing in the detection of breast cancer. Breast imaging includes screening and diagnostic 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, stereotactic needle biopsy, and ultrasound-guided biopsy.
More information about services at our Breast Care Center, call 251-266-3577.
Providence is one of the first hospitals in Mobile, Alabama, to routinely use computer-assisted diagnostic technology (called ImageChecker) for all screening mammograms. Breast X-rays are converted to digital images and electronically scanned to detect and highlight areas of abnormality for further medical review. Medical studies show that this type of breast imaging analysis can improve early detection of breast cancers.
Supportive Cancer Care
The hallmark of our cancer care program is our team approach. Our services are centered around the care of the whole person, healing body, mind, and spirit. Our programs include a breast cancer support group and Camp Bluebird, a camp for adult cancer survivors. Call 251-266-2852 for details about Camp Bluebird.
