Ascension Michigan Leading in HIPEC Care
At Ascension St. John Hospital, our doctors specialize in treating advanced cancers with some of the most up-to-date technology and procedures.
The care team at Ascension St. John Hospital is the first in Michigan to provide Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), a procedure for treating advanced cancers. HIPEC is used to treat various types of cancers, including gastrointestinal or gynecologic cancers that have spread to the lining of the abdominal cavity, colorectal, gastric, ovarian, appendiceal, mesothelioma or any gastrointestinal or gynecologic malignancy that has spread to the peritoneum.
The treatment involves surgically removing cancerous tumors from the abdominal cavity, then bathing the cavity with a heated chemotherapy solution. The solution is then removed, and the incision is closed. Delivering heated chemotherapy throughout the abdominal cavity distributes the drug thoroughly and allows it to directly penetrate the areas of cancer and reach areas where cancer cells aren’t easily visible.
The HIPEC program offered at Ascension St. John in Detroit is led by Dr. Richard Berri, Chief of Surgical Oncology and the Director of the Peritoneal Malignancies Program. Since his arrival, Dr. Berri and his team have performed more than 300 HIPEC cases at Ascension St. John Hospital, which gives them valuable experience that helps them care for your loved one.
If you are interested in additional information regarding the HIPEC procedure, please schedule a phone conversation with Dr. Berri at 313-647-3252 or complete this contact form to connect with our Nurse Navigator.
Day, evening and weekend hours are available.
