Every day, members of the Ascension St. John Auxiliary show their commitment to service by volunteering throughout Ascension St. John.

Ascension St. John depends on volunteers to help patients, guests and associates. Whether you are a retiree wanting to give back to the community, a student exploring careers, or just have a simple desire to help others, there are many opportunities. As a volunteer you can meet new friends, develop skills, and rejuvenate your spirit by contributing your time and talent to help others.

Whether providing directions to visitors, running the register at the gift shop, or spending time with a patient, our volunteers take pride in impacting the lives of others in a positive way. Some volunteers serve a few hours a week, while others serve several hours every day.

Since 1951, Auxiliary members have shared the values of service of the poor, reverence, integrity, wisdom, creativity, and dedication. As Ascension St. John expands to meet the needs of northeastern Oklahoma, the Auxiliary has increased its volunteer services to serve as support.

Becoming a volunteer

The Ascension St. John Auxiliary offers various volunteer opportunities at Ascension St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Ascension St. John Owasso, Ascension St. John Broken Arrow and Ascension St. John Sapulpa. Assisting hospital care teams, patients, and guests, is the primary purpose and goal of the volunteer program. We need volunteers in numerous areas. Our goal is to find that perfect fit, matching the volunteer’s interest, skills and availability with the needs of the hospital.

SUBMIT VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

• Cardiopulmonary Rehab – Volunteers lend support to patients in the recovery process from heart health and pulmonary issues. Volunteers answer general questions and provide encouragement to patients as they exercise and rehabilitate in a safe environment and assist care teams by preparing patient evaluation and discharge packets. We are seeking volunteers who are very outgoing, nonjudgmental, and who can easily talk to all types of people —even in stressful situations. This opportunity is available at Ascension St. John Medical Center.
• Companions on the Journey – Volunteers serve to provide a compassionate and caring presence for patients who are alone in their final moments. New volunteers must serve in another capacity in the hospital for at least three months prior to joining Companions in the Journey. Volunteers must be able to interact in a nonjudgmental manner with people of all faiths or no faith. Volunteers should be comfortable sitting with someone and being silent. We welcome volunteers who have a sensitivity to, concern for, and empathy with the needs of patients who are at the end stage of life. This opportunity is available at Ascension St. John Medical Center.
• Dismissals – Volunteers are very active, transporting patients in wheelchairs to various departments of the hospital and assisting with discharging patients. Volunteers also help transport equipment to various areas of the hospital. Help is needed Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This opportunity is available at Ascension St. John Medical Center.
• Emergency Department – If you work well under stress and enjoy being active, consider assisting our patients and their families in the Emergency Department. Volunteers help care teams with various tasks such as providing warm blankets to patients, listening to families, helping transport equipment and stocking supplies. This department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during holidays and on weekends. This area is for volunteers who have served in another capacity of the hospital and have proven they are dedicated and dependable. This is a wonderful opportunity for college-age students interested in medical fields. Volunteers must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time and lift up to 20 pounds on a regular basis. This opportunity is available on every campus.
• Flower Delivery Volunteers – Each weekday afternoon from 12-4 p.m., flower volunteers work as a team to deliver flowers, gifts, and mail to patients and associates throughout the hospital. Light computer skills are needed, and we are happy to train. This opportunity is available at Ascension St. John Medical Center.
• Gift Shop – Volunteers serve to greet everyone entering the gift shop, cashiering, answering the phone, taking orders for gifts, and assisting customers with purchases and questions about merchandise. Volunteers can also help to price merchandise and stock shelves. Volunteers should be friendly and helpful and love working with the public. All profits from the Auxiliary’s gift shops return to help the health ministry in pledges and projects, we call this, “Retail with a Mission.”
• Information Desk/Guest Services – Volunteers help our patients and guests by directing visitors from the main lobby to various parts of the hospital. Volunteers should be pleasant and helpful with good listening ears. Light computer skills are necessary, and we are willing to train. Hours of service are primarily Monday through Friday, early morning through 4 p.m. This opportunity is available on every campus.
• Infusion – Volunteers serve alongside nurses and care teams to provide compassionate care to patients who are having infusion treatments. Volunteers deliver warm blankets and snacks and help patients pass the time of chemotherapy, blood and platelet treatments. Volunteers are trained to safely use wheelchairs to help patients to their cars after infusion treatments when needed. This opportunity is available at Ascension St. John Medical Center.
• Surgical Waiting Volunteers – Being detail-oriented and providing personal customer service to patients and families is important. These volunteers check in families and patients prior to surgery and act as a liaison to transfer phone calls and information from the surgeons and care teams to families awaiting information. The volunteers are also helpful escorting and directing guests to various areas of the facilities. Volunteers should have good computer and phone skills, and we are willing to train. This opportunity is available at Ascension St. John Medical Center and Ascension St. John Broken Arrow.
• Way Finding Volunteers – Every day guests and patients find themselves lost in our medical center, and the Way Finding Volunteers are there to assist. Whether a guest is trying to locate a doctor, a patient room, their car, or other points of interest, the volunteer will be strategically positioned near equipment and maps. Volunteers are also encouraged to escort guests to their destinations. We are willing and eager to train. Opportunities are available 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. This service line is designed to be very personable with our guests.

Volunteer information for college students

College students can explore career possibilities by volunteering with the Ascension St. John Auxiliary where you’ll learn by serving. College students must agree to complete a minimum of 100 hours of service to receive verification of hours or references. Volunteering in a hospital setting involves interview, background and reference checks, immunization review, TB testing, orientation attendance, badging and purchase of a uniform, all of which are done to ensure the right care for our patients.

Junior volunteers

The Ascension St. John Auxiliary Junior Volunteer Program provides high school students ages 15-18 who have completed the ninth grade with opportunities to perform community service and explore medical careers, as well as meet other students from the Tulsa area.

• The Junior Volunteer Program application may be used for both the summer and school year programs.
• The summer program fills up quickly. Beginning in January, applications are accepted for the Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday summer sessions. In addition to serving a placement, classes and guest speakers are hosted so students learn about other opportunities first hand from specialty areas. The summer program lasts eight amazing weeks and begins in early June and ends in late July.
• To participate in the school year program, students must commit to a minimum of 50 hours of service. The program provides flexibility by allowing them to choose the day(s) and time(s) to volunteer, including weekends. The program runs September through April.
• Upon receiving an application, we will contact you to schedule an interview. No membership dues are required, but junior volunteers must purchase their own uniforms. Volunteers are required to submit immunization records, have TB tests, and participate in orientation.

The application process includes obtaining two references from teachers or other leaders (please, no family members), interviewing and attending an orientation session. The reference needs to be over the age of 21 and the reference needs to know the applicant for a minimum of one year.

Carpenter Owen Scholarship

Howard Carpenter was a volunteer at Ascension St. John Auxiliary for 22 years and had over 7,000 hours of service. He believed in helping youth and paying it forward, by also donating money to the Ascension St. John Auxiliary for a scholarship.

Each year the Ascension St. John Auxiliary awards a scholarship to a graduating senior who has been accepted to an accredited college or trade school to help defer the expenses of their education. Junior Volunteers must meet service hour requirements but are not required to major in medical professions. The junior volunteer coordinator sends out applications in January to all who qualify, and the applications are due at the end of March. The Ascension St. John Auxiliary invites the winner and a guest to our Auxiliary luncheon in May to receive their award.
