What is a Health Insurance Marketplace?
Eligible Hoosiers can use Indiana's Health Insurance Marketplace to learn about their health insurance options, compare plans, and enroll in health coverage for themselves or their families. Additionally, Marketplaces provide Hoosiers with information on programs available to help lower their monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs, and help them determine if they're eligible for public health coverage programs like Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
Can I purchase Health Insurance Through the Marketplace?
Most Hoosiers are eligible to purchase private health coverage through Indiana's Health Insurance Marketplace as long as they:
- Live in the United States
- Are a U.S. citizen or national (or are lawfully present)
- Are not currently incarcerated
What Key Dates do I Need to Remember?
If you didn’t enroll in a 2016 health insurance plan by January 31, 2016, you can’t enroll in a health insurance plan for 2016 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
I Have Insurance Through my Employer. Does This Affect Me?
No. If you are eligible for employer-sponsored health coverage, you will not be affected.
Whether you qualify for the Marketplace will depend on what kind of coverage your employer offers. If your job-based coverage is considered "affordable" and meets minimum value, you won't be able to get lower costs on premiums or out-of-pocket costs in the Marketplace. This is true no matter what your income and family size are.
Employer coverage is considered affordable if the employee's share of the annual premium for self-only coverage is no greater than 9.5% of annual household income. Read More
How Much Will Insurance Cost?
Monthly premium costs for insurance purchased through the Marketplace are not yet available.
What if I Can’t Afford Insurance?
Based on your income and family size, you may qualify for financial assistance.
Individuals making up to $46,680 or a family of 4 making up to $95,400 may qualify for help paying their monthly premiums when they purchase health insurance through the Marketplace.
Additionally, individuals making up to $29,175 or a family of 4 making up to $59,625 may qualify for additional assistance to help lower the amount they pay for out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, coinsurance, and co-payments.
What if I’m a Part-Time Employee Without Health Coverage?
If you're a part-time worker without job-based coverage, you may be able to buy health insurance in the Marketplace and get lower costs based on your income. Read more
What if I’m Self Employed?

What if I Have Medicare?
Medicare isn't part of the Health Insurance Marketplace, so you don't need to do anything. If you have Medicare, you are considered covered.
The Marketplace won't affect your Medicare choices, and your benefits won't be changing. No matter how you get Medicare, whether through Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan, you'll still have the same benefits and security you have now. You won't have to make any changes.
