Classes & Support Groups for Better Living


Wellness Program
Sacred Heart offers a wellness program that focuses on a supervised fitness program as well as education on diet and lifestyle changes. Clients need a physician's referral to get in. Call 416-6152 for more details.

Surgical Weight Loss Support Group
This support group was established to provide a forum for pre-op and post-op lap band and gastric bypass patients to meet and discuss with other patients who may have gained insight through their personal experience. Meetings are on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Greenhut Auditorium. Contact: Bariatric Clinic 416-7546

Smoking Cessation

Sacred Heart Hospital offers one-on-one consultations by appointment to help smokers develop a plan for quitting, based on their individual level of addiction and their habits. This service also provides telephone follow-up. To make an appointment or for more information, call 416-7764.

Cancer Support Groups
Sacred Heart Cancer Center provides emotional support and education for cancer patients and their families through a variety of support groups. For more information, visit the Cancer Center Support Groups website or call our Cancer Support Services office at 850-416-2679.                 

Prostate Cancer Self Help Group
This group sponsored by the American Cancer Society is designed to educate and support men facing prostate cancer. Meets the first Saturday of the month at Sacred Heart Hospital, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Call 438-4491.

Gulf Coast Wings of Hope, Inc. Support Group 
Supporting families of children with blood disorders and cancer. Anyone with a friend or family member who has been stricken with a form of childhood cancer or blood disorder is welcome. All meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM in Conference Room A of the Women's and Children's Hospital at Sacred Heart. Grief Support Group for Adults

Classes on Cardiac Health and Stroke Support

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
Sacred Heart Hospital has a medically supervised program which provides individualized exercise and education for heart patients as well as those who are at high risk for heart disease. Physician referral required. Call 416-6150.

Stroke Support Group at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast 
Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach hosts a Stroke Support Group that meets on the 2nd Monday of every month at 3 p.m. All stroke survivors, caregivers and family members are invited to attend this free support group to learn more about stroke, share experiences and become inspired to keep moving forward after surviving a stroke.

The free support group is facilitated by Jan Stanko, spouse and caregiver for a stroke survivor; Mia Lawson, speech therapist; and Tami Huston, occupational therapist with Sacred Heart Rehabilitation. For more information or to join the group, call (850) 278-3600 or toll-free 1-877-416-1600.

 


Classes & Support Groups for Childbirth, Parenting, & Family

Infant/Child CPR Course
Classes are held every Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Fee is $22 per person. Call 416-7264. Course offered by Sacred Heart Education.

Babysitter Class
This class is open to youth from ages 11-15 for $30 (lunch is not provided). All participants receive an American Heart Association Family & Friends CPR Card, plus a Sacred Heart Hospital Babysitting Certificate. Classes are held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5051 Carpenter’s Creek Drive in Pensacola at our Population Health Building. Pre-registration is required. Pensacola Parents of Multiples 
Pensacola Parents of Multiples meet the second Thursday of each month at Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. in Conference Rooms C & D, which are located in a hallway between The Children's Hospital and the Cafeteria. Parking is available in the 9th Avenue Parking garage and in the lot in front of The Children's Hospital. If you are expecting or already blessed with multiples, you are encouraged to get free, helpful information. We offer a support network, social activities for children and parents, library, and more. Held on Sunday afternoons every three months, this program invites grandparents-to-be to Sacred Heart Women's Hospital for a personal tour. The program also discusses current trends in birth and car seat safety. Call 416-7000.

The TOBACCO CESSATION program consists of:

  • Quit Smoking Now, a six week program with a Certified QSN Cessation Clinician.
  • One-on-one counseling sessions with a Certified Tobacco Cessation Clinician.
  • Proactive telephone counseling to assist you in remaining tobacco-free.
  • Pharmacotherapy recommendations based on your medical history, tobacco questionaire and person preference.
  • Social support as part of your treatment and assist you in securing social support in your daily life.

Classes & Support Groups for Diabetes and Prevention

Classes for Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

The diabetes prevention program is a year-long lifestyle change program for people at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.  Classes are offered in a supportive atmosphere for individuals diagnosed with Prediabetes. Classes for Diabetes:

Sacred Heart's Diabetes Education Program offers individual and group instruction to help patients gain knowledge to control their disease, avoid complications and teach or enhance skills for a healthier life. Our Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) include registered nurses and registered dietitians.  For more information or to register for a class, please call (850) 416-7261.

  • Living Well with Diabetes
    Course for adults with diabetes and their family members. Emphasizes the development of self-management skills.   • Diabetes and Pregnancy
    A class offered weekly for women with Type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes.   • Insulin Training
    • Skills training on equipment use and its safe disposal
    • An understanding of insulin's and their action
    • Hypoglycemia: signs, symptoms and treatment
  • Insulin Pump Training
    • Comprehensive training to learn the skills needed to successfully use an insulin pump (hands on training)
    • Carbohydrate counting is an important component in achieving good control on a pump. A registered dietitian is available for this type of education.
  • Pre-Pump Training
    • Discussion of benefits of pump and insulin pump limitations.
    • Discussion of types of insulin pumps and infusion sets available.
    • Hands-on time learning about how the insulin pumps work.
  • Continuous Glucose Monitor application and training
    • Professional: continuous glucose monitor is applied by our certified diabetes educators. The monitor is worn for 6 days. The monitor provides glucose readings every 5 minutes. The glucose monitor provides important information on treatment decision to help improve glucose control.
    • Personal: education provides comprehensive training on the use of personal glucose monitor. Includes hands on training and application.


Individual Nutrition Counseling

Medical Nutrition Therapy is provided in the following areas:
