The nationally recognized S.T.A.B.L.E. Program provides guidelines for the assessment and stabilization of sick infants in the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization period. These guidelines are based upon evidence-based recommendations whenever possible. The course is structured and taught in six modules:

  1. Sugar and safe care
  2. Temperature management
  3. Airway
  4. Blood pressure
  5. Lab work
  6. Emotional support

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program content is critical to the effort to reduce infant mortality and morbidity and is intended for use by all healthcare team members.

Course Objectives

  • Identify the signs of hypoglycemia and recommended care
  • Identify detrimental effects of hypothermia
  • Identify signs of respiratory distress and discuss issues concerning adequate ventilation and oxygenation
  • Differentiate between hypovolemic, cardiogenic and septic shock
  • List risk factors that predispose the neonate to infection and sepsis
  • Explain and apply acid-base alignment nomograms
  • Discuss the special needs of families of transported infants

Enrollment and textbooks

Textbooks (S.T.A.B.L.E. Course Manual 6th edition) can be loaned to the participant at no cost. Participants may purchase a textbook from the Clinical Professional Development Department for $50.

Continuing education
