He had one last chance to beat diabetes, and bariatric surgery saved his life

Dan struggled with his weight most of his life and had severe diabetes until he had to make a change.

Many patients have tried various tactics to lose weight for years before they finally seriously consider bariatric surgery.

“It got to the point where my doctor told me, ‘This is your last chance to get your diabetes under control.’” Dan says, “I was becoming insulin resistant because I was taking so much insulin at the time. That was my biggest concern.”

“Every time I woke up, I was constantly tired,” Dan says. “I could not walk half a mile.”

Many times, it is other health concerns such as diabetes, heart conditions or pain in joints that bring patients to the bariatrics option. At the advice of his doctors, Dan underwent a gastric bypass. Before his surgery, Dan weighed 255, and with surgery, he lost about 100 pounds.

“The biggest reaction was from my family. They are in California, and we don’t travel to see them often. I got out of the car, and my sister was in tears, my brother was in tears. It was just the best reaction.” Dan says, “The best part is when you go through your closet and you have nothing to wear!”
